Interview with Héctor Magaña, professor at the Business School at the campus Estado de México of the Tecnológico de Monterrey.
With the passing of the pandemic, the number of account holders who carry out operations through a mobile device increased from 39.05 to 82.19 million; the adoption has been “brutal and spectacular”, says BBVA.
With the passing of the Covid-19 pandemic, digital operations accelerated significantly in the country and the banking sector was not far behind.
In just four years, the number of accounts that carry out transactions through mobile banking doubled, while the total number of bank branches showed a decrease, according to data from the Banco de México (Banxico).
In December 2019, before the health crisis, 39.05 million accounts with digital transactions were registered. As of September of this year there are already 82.19 million, that is, an increase of 110 percent.
In contrast, the number of bank branches showed a reduction of 7.9 percent, going from 12,883 to 11,866, amid less in-person activity.
“The pandemic forced people to carry out many activities digitally to avoid becoming infected, the fear of going out and getting sick from Covid-19 led many families to change their lifestyle, including the way they paid for electricity, the telephone and cable,” commented Tec de Monterrey professor Héctor Magaña.
With that, he said, we saw that many operations that were carried out in person began to be carried out through a mobile device, such as the supermarket and, of course, banking operations.
